Saturday 5 January Which cities are we talking about? The cities of Fez, Meknes, Marrakesh and Rabat. They are collectively known as the imperial cities, and have all, at some point in Morocco’s history, been the capital; Rabat is the current holder. The oldest is Fez, first established as capital in the ninth century under Sultan Idriss II, a great-great grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
After the fall of his dynasty, the Almoravides took over, and Marrakesh became their capital; but Fez remained an important city, and has been capital twice since under different rulers. The Almohads took control in the 12th century and built a new city, Rabat, as their capital; this was replaced, during the rule of Morocco’s notorious sultan, Moulay Ismael, by Meknes. Rabat again became capital under the French protectorate, which began in , and retained the title after independence.
Where should I start? The most exciting of the imperial cities is built on a grand scale, with surrounding walls that extend for nearly 10 miles. The best views over the city are from the Merenid tombs on the north side. Fez is really three towns in one.

I reprint the Chart here with the caveat that Schrade Tang marks were pretty constant from until the early ‘s when they started to come in various designs and wordings over the next 34 years that made them hard to period date. Another caveat is that Schrade knives made after have tang mark wordings that recently look closer and closer to the old Schrade’s tang markings and a collector should be looking at the font and etch on the knife versus tang mark wording as well as the total knife makeup itself as one’s best guide.
Many old experts have always told me do not read the Tang Mark but read the knife. Unfortunately this Chart is as big as I can post the picture in eBay’s guides despite enlarging it to try to increase its size and eBay supplying no tool to increase its size. A better view of the chart can be found at the original discussion site: Colonial Knife also denies making Edgemaster.

Of late there are rumors of people counterfeiting stampings which clouds the issue considerably. If the stamps are too crisp it may be an indication of fakery. This is a very difficult call in some instances. So when in doubt follow your gut instinct. We offer some examples under the page “What to look for. Markings on a unique dagger attributed to the French Maquis resistance. Here we have the ubiquitous broad arrow along with the desirable B2. This is the only example I have seen of this stamp number. This is a post-war knife. Two very different French “Nail-head” broad arrow stamps.

Randall Made Knives Story» Steeped in a rich blade making tradition, the Randall story is presented here through the words of Bo Randall, our founder, as well .
In , Albert M. Baer purchased the Ulster Knife Company which was founded in Ellenville, New York , in the s and merged it with the Imperial Knife Company and designated this new business as the Imperial Knife Associated Companies, to produce knives for the military. Albert’s brother, Henry Baer, was the company’s first president and the namesake for Schrade’s “Uncle Henry” line of knives.
Unable to raise sufficient capital to begin knife production, Schrade sold a partial interest in the company to the Walden Knife Company. The company’s unusual name arose from its first knife design, a switchblade or automatic-opening pocket knife with an operating button mounted in the knife bolster. First patented by Schrade in , the knife was eventually produced with a unique style of clip point blade.
In , Schrade patented the Safety Pushbutton Knives, an improved series of switchblade knives with side-mounted operating button and a sliding safety switch. Later developed in slightly modified form as the Presto series, the Schrade switchblade would come to dominate the automatic knife market in the United States for the next fifty-five years. In the s, Schrade bought the defunct Walden Cutlery Company in order to obtain their stocks of handle material for his knives.

The blade is classified by its length. A daito long sword ,either a tachi or katana, is over two shaku one shaku equals approximately 12 inches or 30 centimeters in length. It is also called the uchigatana or katana style. A set of swords consisting of a long sword daito and a short sword shoto which are mounted in identical koshirae are referred to as a daisho. Daisho or daito could only be worn by samurai or higher rank, whereas the short sword shoto or wakizashi could be worn by merchants, tradesmen and craftsmen. Not every light colored wood is as soft as pine. Not every dark wood is as hard as ebony. It is a common misconception that darker woods are harder and thus, more desirable than lighter colored woods. It reminds me of the s when every den had to have dark or walnut colored paneled walls, furniture, and accessories. This may be the very reason that these dens were later called man-caves, because they were almost always dark.
Guys would stain pine to a walnut color to darken it, and make it seem more valuable, as the most valued North American hardwood is American Black Walnut. But I’m sure the practice goes back much further, as even in historic pieces, they were ebonized to make the wood seem richer and more valuable. There is often a persistent belief that the darker woods are harder, and more durable as well as more masculine and bold in visual punch.
This is wrong; there are many very hard, tough, and durable woods that are light in color and well-outlast darker woods like walnut. Simply put, darker does not mean harder or more valuable. You bet they are. Woods like snakewood and pink ivory come at a high price.
