The proprietor’s fishing experience, with forty years with tackle shops on Speyside, and over five hundred salmon to his own rod, knows the requirements of the keen salmon and trout fisherman. Evolution of the salmon fly was fairly static up until the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Welcome Tube flies are exactly what they sound like They are tied up on a tube instead of a standard hook shank. Tubes are thicker than a conventional fly , an attribute most steelhead and salmon fishermen find desirable. Hook size and style can be varied for whatever situation you are fishing. Single, double and even treble hooks regulations permitting are all possibilities.

Since the hooks are not part of the fly there is no chance of the hook rusting before the fly has seen its end. There are also more hook-ups with tubes. With the fly and the hook being separate, when you set that hook the leverage of having a long shanked fly is eliminated. Of course this helps you hold on to more fish after hook-up as well. Tube flies have been around for some time now, particularly in Europe.

These are the salmon spawning grounds where salmon eggs are deposited, for safety, in the gravel. The salmon spawning grounds are also the salmon nurseries, providing a more protected environment than the ocean usually offers. After 2 to 6 months the eggs hatch into tiny larvae called sac fry or alevin. The alevin have a sac containing the remainder of the yolk, and they stay hidden in the gravel while they feed on the yolk. When the yolk has gone they must find food for themselves, so they leave the protection of the gravel and start feeding on plankton.

At this point the baby salmon are called fry. At the end of the summer the fry develop into juvenile fish called parr. Parr feed on small invertebrates and are camouflaged with a pattern of spots and vertical bars. They remain in this stage for up to three years. At this point salmon are called smolt. Smolt spend time in the brackish waters of the river estuary while their body chemistry adjusts their osmoregulation to cope with the higher salt levels they will encounter in the ocean.

When they have matured sufficiently in late spring, and are about 15 to 20 centimetres long, the smolt swim out of the rivers and into the sea.

Bottom bouncing and bar fishing for Chinook and Sockeye salmon has become far and away the most prominent method of fishing in recent summer runs for sports fishermen. Gear used for bottom bouncing in rivers such as the Columbia or Fraser, is unlike any other and very productive. The only necessity to have a good day fishing Sockeye using this method, is making sure they will be there in moderate numbers allowing even beginners, to experience results!

Lets have a look at some of the standard stuff now. If you are new to bottom bouncing and don’t have funds to go buy anything right away, a medium action spinnig rod and reel in the 8 to 9ft range can get you started too. The terminal tackle such as weights, line swivels and more also make all the difference and we’ll have a look at that next.

Aside from its original purpose as a bait hook, the L2 is also commonly used as a salmon egg hook in smaller sizes and for chunk bait presentations in larger sizes, giving anglers unprecedented adaptability with a single, familiar piece of tackle.

Good herring has become harder and harder to find. Look for herring that is vacuum packed. Some anglers are lucky enough to have live herring available in their area. This preserves the brightness of the scales and firms the meat. Before brining, slice and clean your herring so that the inside also toughens up. If you saw at the herring, you will leave a jagged edge that will peel back, degrade, and destroy the action of your bait in the water.

After your smooth slice, wipe your knife blade clean, removing any herring scales from the blade. Herring scales are quite tough and will tear the edges of your bait if not removed. When cutting off the head of the herring, tilt your knife about 20 degrees and angle the knife back about 30 degrees. Even better, use one of the Folbe Cut Plug Guides.

Standard wet fly hook Thread: Flourescent Antron Yarn Body: Estaz, various colors Simple nymphs I also carry an assortment of nymphs, concentrating on generic nymphs like a hare’s ear or a black stonefly. Simple, yet he’s hooked a good number of fish with this fly. Another simple pattern has a tail of woodduck fibers, an abdomen of floss, a thorax of sparkle dubbing palmered with a hen hackle, and a wingcase of ringneck pheasant tail fibers.

That’s about as complex as I care to make my steelhead nymhs. You should be able to pop any steelhead nymph or egg pattern off your vise like popcorn. You’ll fish them better that way, because you’re not afraid to lose them. No pool hop The fishing is a bit different than my normal stream fishing. When I fish a trout stream, I like to be constantly on the move, fishing fresh water with each cast.

When I fish the Salmon River, I do just the opposite. I tend to anchor myself in one area and fish it thoroughly. More than likely, I’ll be the guy the furthest downstream along the shore, as that will give me the most room to swing a fly without worrying about interfering with anyone downstream from me.
