The head of the university had the title of chancellor from at least , and the masters were recognised as a universitas or corporation in In addition, members of many religious orders , including Dominicans , Franciscans , Carmelites and Augustinians , settled in Oxford in the mid th century, gained influence and maintained houses or halls for students. Among the earliest such founders were William of Durham , who in endowed University College , and John Balliol , father of a future King of Scots ; Balliol College bears his name. Thereafter, an increasing number of students lived in colleges rather than in halls and religious houses. Among university scholars of the period were William Grocyn , who contributed to the revival of Greek language studies, and John Colet , the noted biblical scholar. With the English Reformation and the breaking of communion with the Roman Catholic Church, recusant scholars from Oxford fled to continental Europe, settling especially at the University of Douai.

Posted on April 10, by victoriastevensconservation For our first meeting of , OCG was delighted to welcome Bianca Madden , an independent art conservator who specialises in wall paintings, sculpture and polychrome or gilded surfaces, to talk about her work on the fifteenth century BCE Theban tombs in Egypt. Bianca took us on a spectacular virtual tour of the tomb chapel of Sennefer, which is very typical of many Theban tombs in regard to its condition and state of preservation.
Her presentation showed the group not only the method of construction and the nature of the painting media but also the conservation approach that she and an international team of conservators took to reveal details that had been obscured for centuries, largely due to damage caused by natural degradation over time as well as previous human activity. Unlike the burial chamber of Sennefer, which has long been open to the public, the tomb chapel is unlikely to be opened for public viewing due to its extensive damage and fragmentary state.
