Early history[ edit ] Although the early history of habitation in the area is limited, the Romans called the settlement Caletum. Julius Caesar mustered to 1, sailing boats, five legions and some 2, horses at Calais, due to its strategic position, to attack Britannia. At some time prior to the 10th century, it would have been a Flemish -speaking fishing village on a sandy beach backed by pebbles and a creek, with a natural harbour located at the western edge of the early medieval estuary of the River Aa.
As the pebble and sand ridge extended eastward from Calais, the haven behind it developed into fen , as the estuary progressively filled with silt and peat. Subsequently, canals were cut between Saint-Omer , the trading centre formerly at the head of the estuary, and three places to the west, centre and east on the newly formed coast:

The club has a very rich history, dating back to its founding in and the present golf course we see today was completed in The club rose to fame very soon after it opened, quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the best links courses in England and its illustrious career soon took off, with the club having hosted ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and several other prestigious tournaments, including the Seniors Open Championships.
As with many golf courses though, slight improvements are made over the decades based upon feedback and popularity and in , Royal Lytham and Saint Annes Golf Club invited Harry Colt , the renowned golf course architect to cast his eye over the course. Although still most definitely a links course, its location may suggest otherwise. With fairly even ground and excellently maintained greens, the course is a pleasure to play, but it is by no means easy. The artificial sandhills that have been constructed over the years prove very challenging for even the most professional of golfers and in combination with the large number of bunkers on the site, make for very testing golfing conditions.
The greens are certainly fast and true, and are some of the best kept in England.

History[ edit ] One of the earliest sites of historical interest in the valley is that of the dykes at Broadclough , which are associated with the Battle of Brunanburh. In the Haslingden and Todmorden trust built another new road along the valley bottom, from Stacksteads through Thrutch, Rawtenstall and Newhall Hey.
In the route was taken over by Rawtenstall Corporation Tramways.
